How to Make Fish Pickle at Home
Fish pickle is a popular condiment in many cultures around the world. It is made by pickling fish in a mixture of spices, salt, and vinegar. The pickling process preserves the fish and gives it a tangy, sour flavor.
Fish pickle can be made with any type of fish, but firm-fleshed fish such as tuna, salmon, or mackerel are the best choices. The fish should be cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces before pickling.
Ingredients:
- 1 kg fish, cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/4 cup turmeric powder
- 1/4 cup red chili powder
- 1/4 cup coriander powder
- 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
- 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
- 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup vinegar
Instructions:
- Wash the fish and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
- In a large bowl, combine the fish, salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, black peppercorns, cumin seeds, and mustard seeds. Mix well and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the marinated fish and fry until golden brown.
- Remove the fish from the pan and drain on paper towels.
- In the same pan, heat the vinegar to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add the fried fish to the vinegar and simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Let the pickle cool completely before storing it in a clean, airtight container.
Tips:
- For a milder pickle, use less red chili powder.
- You can also add other spices to the pickle, such as ginger, garlic, or fenugreek.
- Store the pickle in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months.
