How to Make Fish Pickle at Home

Fish pickle at home

Fish pickle is a popular condiment in many cultures around the world. It is made by pickling fish in a mixture of spices, salt, and vinegar. The pickling process preserves the fish and gives it a tangy, sour flavor.

Fish pickle can be made with any type of fish, but firm-fleshed fish such as tuna, salmon, or mackerel are the best choices. The fish should be cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces before pickling.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg fish, cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/4 cup turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup red chili powder
  • 1/4 cup coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Wash the fish and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the fish, salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, black peppercorns, cumin seeds, and mustard seeds. Mix well and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the marinated fish and fry until golden brown.
  4. Remove the fish from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  5. In the same pan, heat the vinegar to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the fried fish to the vinegar and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  7. Let the pickle cool completely before storing it in a clean, airtight container.

Tips:

  • For a milder pickle, use less red chili powder.
  • You can also add other spices to the pickle, such as ginger, garlic, or fenugreek.
  • Store the pickle in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months.
